Report: Ministry sees 10 mln e-SIM users in Russia in 3 years

MOSCOW, Aug 21 (PRIME) -- Russia may have about 10 million subscribers using virtual SIM cards, e-SIMs, in three years, Deputy Digital Development Minister Oleg Ivanov said on Friday in an interview to project Digital Journalism.

“The e-SIM is very convenient; it’s a fast developing trend now all over the world,” Ivanov said.

Mobile operator T2 RTK Holding, working under brand Tele2, debuted in the country with e-SIMs when it offered them in April 2019 in its five Moscow flagship stores. But a month later, the ministry asked the operator to suspend the initiative till all uncertainties were settled. In September 2019, the ministry said it saw no restrictions for the idea, and the operator resumed the pilot project.

At present, mobile operators MegaFon and VimpelCom, working as Beeline, are implementing e-SIMs as well.
